Help Participate in the California All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (CalATBI) by collecting soil samples from your own backyard!
California is one of only 36 biodiversity hotspots on planet Earth. The immense scale of California’s diversity means much of it remains unexplored, with thousands of species yet to be discovered. CalATBI is a specimen-based, DNA-powered effort to finally discover all of California’s biodiversity.
CalATBI efforts include conducting field work to find unexplored biodiversity, sequencing millions of specimens to build a DNA barcode reference library, developing next-generation technologies to accelerate discovery, and preserving biodiversity specimens and samples for the benefit of future generations.
Our goal is to save our precious biodiversity today, for tomorrow and always.
You can help by participating in our North Coast BioBlitz September 22nd through October 10th.We are particularly interested in collecting soil samples from natural areas with native plant cover. Does that sound like your backyard or other private land you have access to with landowner permission? If so, please visit our to sign up!

Since 1987, Northcoast Children’s Services has teamed up with local sponsors and talented artists to turn the sidewalks of the Arcata Plaza into a vibrant outdoor gallery — and it’s happening again on the first Saturday in October!
Pastels on the Plaza is more than just an art event — it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and compassion. Local businesses and sponsors purchase squares of sidewalk, and generous artists donate their time and talent to transform each one into a stunning pastel masterpiece. The result? A kaleidoscope of color that brings joy to many and supports a vital cause.
Why it matters: Every square drawn helps fund preschool, childcare, and other resources for over 600 children and families in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Your support helps build brighter futures — one pastel stroke at a time.
Want to get involved? Sponsor a square, volunteer your artistry, or simply come out and enjoy the magic. Artists and sponsors can register online here: Pastels on the Plaza | Northcoast Children's Services.
Whether you’re an art lover, a community supporter, or just looking for a beautiful day out, Pastels on the Plaza is the place to be!
